Oil Pumps

Function of Oil Pumps

The oil pump is a vital component of your engine's lubrication system. Its role is to draw engine oil from the oil pan and circulate it under pressure throughout the entire engine. This oil circulation is essential for:

  • Lubricating the engine's moving parts (crankshaft, connecting rods, pistons, camshafts, etc.), thereby reducing friction and wear.
  • Cooling certain parts of the engine by dissipating heat.
  • Cleaning the engine by carrying impurities and debris to the oil filter.
  • Protecting against corrosion.

Adequate and constant oil pressure is indispensable for the proper functioning and longevity of the engine.

Maintenance and Failure Signs of an Oil Pump

Although oil pumps are generally robust, they can wear out or be affected by other engine problems.

Maintenance Tips:

  • Strictly adhere to engine oil change intervals and use oil of the viscosity and quality recommended by the manufacturer.
  • Replace the oil filter at every oil change. A clogged filter can reduce oil flow.
  • Maintain a correct oil level. A level that is too low can cause the pump to lose its prime.

Common Failure Signs:

  • Oil pressure warning light illuminated: This is the most alarming sign. If this light comes on (often a red oil can icon), stop the engine immediately in a safe place and have the system checked.
  • Abnormal engine noises: Clattering, knocking, or metallic grinding sounds may indicate a lack of lubrication.
  • Engine overheating: Poor lubrication can lead to increased friction and therefore higher temperatures.
  • Low oil pressure reading: If your vehicle is equipped with an oil pressure gauge, an abnormally low reading is a sign of trouble.
  • Premature wear of engine components: Difficult to detect without disassembly, but a failing oil pump will cause significant long-term damage.

Oil pump failure can quickly lead to catastrophic and very costly engine damage. If you suspect a problem, do not delay in having your vehicle inspected. Konipa provides quality oil pumps to ensure your engine's protection.
